Snickers and Mars bars are two of the UK’s most popular brands. The challenge was to produce a single traded outer with display features for retail. As a result of this project, the amount of packaging material used for transporting these very high volume products has been reduced. The first step was to take away the outer corrugated shipper and the inner carton board collation pack. They were replaced by a single corrugated pack. But this was no ordinary pack. It was designed for exceptional strength, higher pallet stacks, packing efficiency and excellent visual appearance. Using a heavy microflute grade enabled the pack to exceed 400kg under compression. This increased the number of units that could be stacked on each pallet from 216 to 270 – that’s 25% more product per pallet. As a result, around 270 lorry movements per year were no longer necessary. What’s more, an annual reduction of over 301,000 kg of packaging material has been achieved. The very significant 20% reduction in total freight costs is important – and so is the environmental gain, less lorries on the road, less fuel used, less emissions and less material to recycle.
