Pharmaceutical pouch delivers one day transit protection

Coldpack has launched a high-performance inflatable thermal envelope specifically designed for transporting small termperature-sensitive pharmaceutical items.  Manufactured using Coldpack’s revolutionary Airliner insulating film, the One Day pharmaceutical pouch maintains product contents within a +2° to +8ºC temperature range for up to 24 hours.

Coldpack anticipates that typical applications will include the transfer of medication to patients, hospital distribution and supply chain, pharmaceutical wholesale distribution and the shipment of biological materials or samples.

The pouch meets market demand for a small, portable solution to replace the current industry standard of large urethane boxes, which have considerable disadvantages in terms of their weight, bulk and practicality.  “Existing solutions on the market aren’t designed for transporting small quantities or small items, and yet these are common requirements transported by pharmacists or medical professionals,” explains Nicolas Choffel, Coldpack’s expert pharmacist.

Delivered inflated, the Coldpack One Day pharmaceutical pouch offers all of the advantages of Airliner in a convenient, ready-to-use format.  Airliner’s unique patented construction, which uses a special film manufactured using DuPont™ Surlyn resin, blocks calorie transfer to minimise heat transfer.  The material is lightweight for comfortable handling but robust enough to provide shock absorption from impacts to further protect the contents.  Fully reusable, Airliner’s environmental impact is 50% less than that of EPS foam – confirmed by an independent Pira International life cycle assessment in August 2007.

The medicine to be transported is placed in the designated product section, and eutectic gel packs are inserted into the adjoining compartment.  This ensures that there is no direct contact between the product and the cooling source.  The zip pouch is then sealed in one simple action, eliminating any risk of the pack opening accidentally during transport and enabling the contents to be distributed in complete security at above-zero cold temperatures.

Tested according to the AFNOR NF S99-700 standards, the One Day pharmaceutical pouch has proved its insulating performance over the 16 hours of the 16a cycle and for even longer (24h) depending on usage (number of gel packs, external temperature).
Three sizes – 1 litre, 3 litres and 5 litres – are available to correspond to the volume of the products being transported and the required number of ice packs to maintain a correct and consistent temperature.

Several Coldpack products have already been recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) – including the company’s Back Pack, which is considered to be the best adapted vaccine transportation solution for the final leg out to difficult-access areas throughout the world.
Airliner’s unique functionality in terms of delivering cold chain distribution in a protective, lightweight and environmentally-conscious packaging format is ideal for pharmaceutical transport, and the industry is already a significant user of our technology,” confirms Nicolas Choffel.  “The launch of the Coldpack One Day pharmaceutical pouch provides an equally reliable and practical system for the delivery of smaller temperature-sensitive items.”
