New Production Project Delivers Lean Excellence for Clondalkin

A Lean Production Project introduced to Clondalkin Group’s Engineered Films Business Unit has delivered manufacturing excellence for the packaging manufacturer.

The LEAN concept was initially introduced to the working processes at the Group’s Flexoplast site in the Netherlands, which is a leader in the development and manufacture of polyolefine-based flexible packaging for the food, beverage and fast moving consumer goods markets.

Reduced lead-times for customers, product traceability, and clearer methods of working for employees are just some of the benefits of the project.
The concept is being rolled out across all of Clondalkin Group’s operational sites in its Flexible Packaging Division.
Jeroen van der Meer, Managing Director of Clondalkin Group’s Engineered Films Business Unit, said: “The introduction of the LEAN concept has generated a broad range of advantages, which will indirectly and directly benefit our customers. The project has generated more personal commitment from all of our employees with each of them being actively encouraged to deliver ideas and input.
“The response was very encouraging and their ideas were translated into visible steps, measurements and improvements to our working processes. After just a few months we were able to see clear tangible results, for example, we managed to cut a repeat order lead-time for film by 13 days. This is good for us and it is good for customers.”
Print plate preparation, control and delivery were streamlined as part of the new Lean procedurtes, which ensures that print jobs always start on-time. There is less work in progress on the shop floor, which facilitates internal transport movements, and the warehouses for base components and finished goods are operated more efficiently.
van der Meer added: “The ability to be competitive is key in today’s demanding market. By implementing LEAN principles across all operations, we are adding one more dimension amongst many by which we will continue to gain a growing presence in our markets and build on our first-class reputation as a world-leading packaging supplier.”
