Soon manufacturers of spirits, wine and beer might be obliged to place a warning “A drunk driver can be a killer” on the bottles.

In Parliament on Friday February 29th, 2008 members of the Law and Justice (Prawo i Sprawiedliwość) party presented their amendment to the Law on Education in Sobriety and the Fight against Alcoholism.
According to the amendment, warnings against the harmfulness of drinking alcohol, aimed first of all at drivers, pregnant women and young people, should appear on all bottles containing alcoholic drinks.
The writing in large white letters would take 20 per cent of the surface area of a bottle or a can. A similar bill was prepared by the Ministry of Health during the previous term of Parliament, but the members of Parliament did not manage to vote for it before the end of the term. Now the chances of changing the law are much higher.
“It is unlikely that the bill will be passed in this form”, says Krzysztof Brzózka from the State Agency for Prevention of Alcohol-Related Problems. In his opinion the writing taking 20 per cent of the surface area of the packaging will make the brand label illegible. Also the content of the writing should be well thought over.
On the other hand, Brzózka admits that the idea of warnings is right. Alcohol is becoming a serious problem in Poland
