Eco Printers Take their Own Go Green Challenge

MCR Print, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of environmentally friendly printing, has taken their own Go Green challenge, with their Brighton office going carbon neutral, paving the way for an exciting new market.

As businesses become increasingly conscious of their carbon footprint, the resource-heavy printing industry has been forced to assess its methods. From the trees that source paper, to the dyes used in inks, the entire supply chain has come under question. Whilst most printers are only just waking up to this realisation, from the Company’s inception in 2007, MCR Print has always put the environment first.

The latest step in MCR Print’s environmental efforts has been to undertake a carbon audit of business operations at their Brighton offices.

Co-ordinated by partner Life Size Media, Carbon Decisions calculated the Brighton office’s footprint, taking into consideration emissions from utilities, related travel, purchases and waste. Opportunities for further reducing MCR Print’s impact on the planet were then identified.

The carbon emissions from MCR Print’s Brighton office operations were 10.0 tonnes of equivalent carbon dioxide (CO2e) in the period June 2010 to May 2011. This is equates to one person taking a return business class flight from London to Sydney, and is impressively low for a company of its nature.

Although MCR Print’s Brighton office footprint is low, they wanted to offset any impact to make the offices carbon neutral. The Company decided to support the prize winning Kikonda reforestation project in Uganda, which encourages local people to protect and expand forests in the area.

Max Robinson commented:
“At MCR Print we have supported local community initiatives for years. Undergoing the office carbon audit and offsetting our remaining carbon emissions through the Kikonda Forest Reserve is a wonderful opportunity to extend our commitment to sustainability.”

The carbon audit builds on MCR Print’s already impressive environmental credentials. Last year the Company achieved ISO 14001 certification, a demanding international environmental standard. MCR Print also use vegetable and soya based inks, recycled papers, chemical-free materials and Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) stock as standard.

Max Robinson, Founder and Managing Director of MCR Print, said:
“MCR Print has been challenging companies to take our ‘Go Green’ challenge for years. We are passionate about showing businesses they can have environmentally friendly printing that won’t compromise on quality.”

Following the success of their carbon audit, MCR Print is now looking at extending their ‘green print’ offering, providing clients the opportunity to offset the emissions from their print work.
