Mondi has recently been exploring new models of cooperation and product marketing. A Vienna-based start-up company called Papernomad™ contacted the Kraft Paper Business Unit with an imaginative idea for paper-based stationery and chairs.

The outcome of Papernomad’s cooperation with Mondi is an innovative combination of kraft paper, a biopolymer and a non-woven fabric that is used to make Blackberry and laptop sleeves, as well as conventional and beanbag chairs. Within Mondi, the Kraft Paper and Coatings & Consumer Packaging Business Units collaborated closely to transform this high-quality product proposal into reality.
Christian Skilich, then CEO of the Kraft Paper Business Unit, who decided to pursue the cooperation, tells us about the project, “We wanted to highlight paper’s capacity for innovation and its versatility, and to show that you always have to think of paper when developing a new product. I was fascinated by the creative products offered by the start-up, and by the idea of using Mondi products in a completely new application. Innovation is all about out-of-the-box thinking and the quest to find new and better solutions for our customers. Mondi is open to new ideas and approaches because its future development depends on the advances they can bring.”
Christoph Rochna and Mario C. Bauer, the founders of Papernomad, were looking for a suitable solution for modern, durable and especially sustainable paper products for daily use. They initially targeted “modern nomads” – the young, mobile and hip Facebook generation – but soon realised that the products appeal to a much broader public because they combine a modern and unusual look with the durability and practical utility that are also important in the business world.
“For us, of course, the sustainable approach was important,” says Clemens Stockreiter, CEO Mondi Kraft Paper Europe & International. He continues, “The opportunity to combine an attractive idea for the iPhone generation with a resilient product that reveals the modern side of paper, as well as its versatility and durability, persuaded us to take part in developing a new way of seeing and using paper.”
In March 2012, Papernomad™ received the prestigious Red Dot Design Award in recognition of its products’ ranking among the global leaders in design.
