Aimia Foods Limited had experienced problems with faulty and leaking stick packs caused by dry powder contamination in the seal. Printpack carried out a thorough analysis of the problematic stick packs to determine how they were failing. Using a new triplex film with a speciality polyethylene sealant layer, Printpack created new packs to solve the problem.
Printpack carried out extensive trials of the new packs, including close monitoring of the packing process and the „burst‟ testing used to measure seal integrity. The new packaging not only improved the seal and tear performance but also provided better product protection and preservation, including barrier protection, and enabled easier storage and transportation in difficult conditions such as damp or extreme low temperatures.
Aimia Foods Limited packaging manager Stephen Corbett said: “The previous stickpacks performed poorly during the packing process – the seals leaked, leading to complaints from retailers and consumers. The new packaging development has solved our stickpack leakage problems and Printpack provided us with technical support / excellent communications throughout the whole process.”
Printpack's Europe key account manager Ian Thorne said: “Our aim with this project was to improve product performance, and we delivered a very complex specification that performs well and exceeds previous production standards".
“We have the latest technologies and equipment at Kutno, and achieved an end-product with better quality and reliability than Aimia Foods‟ previous supplier. Producing the packaging at Kutno means that Aimia Foods Limited can rely on security of supply, and because finished stocks are held locally the real lead time is now forty eight hours compared to five to six weeks,” concluded Thorne.
