Exhibitors Will Demonstrate Cutting-edge Food Waste Technology at Waste-Works 2017

Suppliers of waste solutions and services who are specifically targeting the food, drink and packaging industries will exhibit the latest in food waste technology, designed for businesses looking for cost-saving and profit-making solutions at Waste-Works 2017, the UK’S only waste and resource event dedicated to the food and drink industry, coming to ExCeL London this March.

“Waste-Works offers food producers a unique opportunity to explore ways to develop their sustainable credentials and find new waste solutions, including recycling, waste storage and collection, waste to energy solutions (such as food waste to anaerobic digestion), energy efficiency, waste management auditing and training and compliance.”  Explains Event Manager, Nick Piper.

Exhibitors include Organic Waste Logistics (food recycling), East London Biogas (anaerobic digestion), QCR (waste compacting solutions), Power Knot (US waste minimisation solutions), British Gas (energy saving solutions) and Aquabio (waste water treatment).

Key experts and high-profile speakers will provide stimulating debate and discussion at the three-day event from the Outside the Box stage built entirely of recyclable cardboard. Speakers include Adam Leyland, Group Editor, The Grocer and Leader of the Waste Not, Want Not campaign who wants the industry to work towards the goal that any edible food that cannot be sold by retailers and manufacturers should be used to feed people, William Heller, Chief Executive, Organic Waste Logistics is looking at the real scope of the food waste issue, emergent government policy and regulation and both existing and new options for dealing with unavoidable waste.

These bite-sized talks and thought-provoking industry insight briefings will run throughout the event, while daily lunchtime debates will see a number of experts share their views on a wide range of hot topics. 

The latest in equipment will feature high on the Waste-Works agenda with Willen Biogas (Stand N1425) demonstrating the benefits of treating food waste through anaerobic digestion. The company will unveil details of its fully operational London-based 1.5MW AD plant, which turns food waste into valuable biofertiliser and green energy – enough to power 2,600 homes.

The plant already processes thousands of tonnes of waste from a variety of food producers, including bakeries, supermarkets, food processing factories and local councils. With more capacity now available, Willen’s representatives will be on hand to demonstrate to Waste-Works visitors how they can cut carbon and costs by diverting their food waste to the plant, rather than sending it to landfill or incineration.

Adrian Williams, Chairman of Willen Biogas adds: “As a farmer and fresh herb producer, I’m well aware that no food company deliberately creates unnecessary waste however, there will always be a certain amount of unavoidable food waste that does occur. The best treatment option for this is anaerobic digestion, and our state-of-the-art plant makes AD an easy choice for food companies.

“We already process around 600 tonnes of food waste every week, and as our plant is fitted with sophisticated front-end depackaging equipment, it can handle all types of food waste, including packaging. And we’re happy to handle last-minute deliveries, too, with as little as 24 hours’ notice.”

Unveiling another innovative solution to waste is Power Knot UK (Stand N1212), who will be exhibiting the Power Knot LFC® (Liquid Food Composter). The LFC is a fully enclosed automatic bio-digester which turns most food waste into grey water within just 24 hours. Installed in the kitchen, the LFC can digest both raw and cooked food waste including fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, cheese, bread, rice, and noodles. The only output is water which is suitable for disposal down a grey water drain.

The LFC employs and accelerates a series of processes in which microorganisms break down biodegradable material in the presence of oxygen. This acceleration is achieved with the unit’s proprietary mixture of naturally occurring microbes and enzymes as well as the optimisation of aeration, moisture and temperature levels within the LFC.

Its display panel accurately reports the amount of waste disposed and CO2 saved, which can be accessed remotely via the LFC Cloud to compare data from multiple sites. The unit is ideal for hotels, restaurants and supermarkets and in the UK it is in use by Planet Organic, Natural Kitchen, Pure Foods of London and Goldsmiths’ Hall.

Mercedes Hemingway-Price, Director of Power Knot UK commented, “The LFC is simple to operate and greatly reduces the costs of disposal of food waste by diverting it from the landfill. This helps businesses achieve zero waste and reduce their carbon footprint. Exhibiting at the Waste Works show is a great way to launch our presence in the UK. It allows customers to come and see the LFC and meet the people, including the president of the company from the USA.”

As effectively managing unavoidable food waste is still a significant challenge for businesses, exhibitor Organic Waste Logistics (OWL) (Stand N1242) is unveiling the new BioWhale food waste management unit at Waste-Works.

Due to the recent banning of food waste to landfill in Scotland and Northern Ireland, expensive landfill taxes in England, growing pressure to ban sink disposal and growing customer pressure for greater environmental action, the need to find cost-effective recycling solutions is more urgent than ever.

Speaking about the upcoming Waste-Works show, Willie Heller, OWL’s Chief Executive, expressed excitement about sharing his company’s new technology with visitors: “We welcome the chance to speak with food manufacturers and other businesses that generate unavoidable food waste. At our booth OWL’s new food waste management unit, the BioWhale, will be showcased.  In just a few minutes visitors can learn how the OWL system will improve their site cleanliness, increase their recycling rates and reduce their carbon footprint. It only takes five minutes to determine the cost savings that can be achieved.”
