TS:

This year's MeetingPack is the third edition of the event. Can you tell me something about the history of MeetingPack? What was the vision upon which it was founded?

SG:

MeetingPack was born in 2013 as an event co-organized by two technology centres, AINIA, focused on food and AIMPLAS, focused on plastic materials.  The aim of both centres was to generate an event that could encompass the entire value chain and join both materials suppliers and packages, such as packaging companies. Indeed, the complementarity of both centres allows us to have this overview and it has been the key of MeetingPack. In the first edition, we had 200 attendees, in the second edition 320 and the expectation for this edition is to reach 400.

TS:

What makes MeetingPack distinct from the many other events in the packaging calendar?

SG:

The event's greatest asset is to make a correct selection of the innovations exhibited. In many events at European level, we see that workshops are very specific and this originates that the speakers and even the topics are repetitive year after year. Besides, you need to attend different events to know all the innovations. MeetingPack is a global event where only new developments are presented, therefore it is organized every two years, with the aim of giving time to significant developments to be born. People who come to MeetingPack are going to meet all the new developments on packaging in just two days.

TS:

Collaboration across the packaging supply chain has become an increasingly important aspect of packaging innovation. Does MeetingPack attempt to help this process, by bringing together such a range of stakeholders?

SG:

The networking between suppliers and customers is the other strong point of MeetingPack. AIMPLAS provides contacts related to raw materials, machinery and manufacturers, while AINIA provides contacts related to packaging processes, packagers and stakeholders. By joining both centres, we get a global event where suppliers and customers can meet, so this is another advantage in comparison with other events in Europe. The organization of thematic events on bottles, sheets, films, etc. can be very interesting for manufacturers, since they belong to their processes, but food companies and end users, who consume all types of packaging, prefer an overall vision of all the new developments and this is exactly what MeetingPack offers.

TS:

What will be the key topics for discussion at this year's event?

SG:

In this edition of MeetingPack, we will see as always the last developments on materials, machinery, processes and products. This year, the main topic is "convenience", in other words, solutions that help consumers to make a simple and easy use of the packaging. In this sense, innovations such as easy-opening and reclosable products, microwavable and ovenable packages for cooking food, smart packages, etc. will be presented. Attendees will also see developments on shelf life increase of barrier and active packaging, always keeping in mind aspects such as sustainability and price.
