[**BENZ Packaging**](https://www.benz-packaging.com/?ref=packagingeurope.com) **has implemented a minimum of 30% post-consumer recycled polyethylene into its vapour corrosion inhibitor (VCI) films, seeking to protect metal components and machines in transit.**

The films are designed to prevent corrosion on metal components during storage and shipping – but the flow of recycled polyethylene can change during processing, and depending on the residues it carries from its previous use. Both can affect the even distribution of the corrosion inhibitor within the film.

In response, BENZ Packaging’s R&D team introduced checks on incoming resin and adjusted how it mixed the inhibitor into the film.

BFSV Verpackungsinstitut Hamburg has independently tested a film sample containing 30% post-consumer recycled polyethylene under TL 8135-0043\. Reportedly, the sample achieved Grade 3 – the highest corrosion protection grade.

“A VCI film has one job,” said Chaitanya Chopra, director at BENZ Packaging. “The part must come out of the pack exactly as it went in, whether it has spent six weeks in a container through the monsoon or a year in a warehouse.”

“No two lots of post-consumer resin behave the same, and VCI chemistry is sensitive to that,” added Vaishnavi Gattupalli, head of R&D at BENZ Packaging.

This solution is said to improve tensile properties compared to the incumbent virgin film.
