Billerud unlocks fibre-based blister lidding, sachets and more in pharma

Billerud’s new PharmaKraft material offers a recyclable, fibre-based alternative for non-sterile sachets, stick packs, strip packs and blister lidding applications in the pharmaceutical sector.

According to Billerud, PharmaKraft is made from fresh fibre with controlled purity characteristics. It is designed for pharmaceutical applications with demanding performance and process requirements – aiming to meet the sector’s stringent quality, purity, and reliability standards.

At the same time, the solution seeks to minimize fossil-based materials and reduce environmental footprint. It is based on renewable raw materials and can be recycled at end-of-life.

Billerud also claims that PharmaKraft is produced with full traceability to support qualification and validation processes. The solution is set to help converters and brand owners transition into fibre-based packaging for dry pharmaceutical products.

It also intends to align with Billerud’s existing healthcare packaging portfolio, including SteriKraft and MediKraft for medical packaging applications.

“Healthcare packaging is entering a period of transformation,” says Florian Schäffeler, Senior Segment Manager Medical at Billerud. “With PharmaKraft, we have created a platform that enables innovation, supports sustainability goals, and helps accelerate the shift from conventional packaging structures to paper-based alternatives made from renewable resources.”

In other news, Easysnap Technology’s single-dose Papersnap packaging can be folded and squeezed to dispense liquid products such as eye drops, disinfectants, and aspirin. The design is expected to ensure full accessibility, avoid loose components, minimize product waste, and streamline recyclability.

Elsewhere, Ahlstrom has launched Grease-Gard PLUS and Grease-Gard PRO as part of its family of high-performance grease-resistant papers. Intended as a paper-based alternative to traditional foil bags and wraps, the solution aims to help brands reduce aluminium content while maintaining food quality, freshness and consumer experience.
