From the desiccant sachets that help protect pharmaceutical products to durable labels used throughout global supply chains, to applications such as race bibs worn by participants in major sporting events, and wristbands issued at festivals and venues, Tyvek® is a trusted material across a wide range of *consumer and industrial* applications. Its combination of durability, printability, lightweight and proven performance has made it a trusted choice for manufacturers for decades.

However, the way manufacturers approach material sourcing is changing. Reducing carbon footprint, meeting company sustainability goals and demonstrating credible environmental progress are now central considerations for procurement teams, sustainability leads and the businesses bringing products to market. Raw material sourcing has moved up the agenda for many organisations. Those reporting under formal sustainability frameworks must now also account for Scope 3 supply chain emissions.

For such customers, DuPont has developed Tyvek® with Renewable Attribution. Available for selected C&I applications, it enables customers to take a meaningful, credible step toward more sustainable material sourcing without changing how they use Tyvek®. The material is a plug-and-play solution, made to the same product specifications as conventional Tyvek®, enabling a seamless transition with no redesign, requalification or disruption to existing processes.

The innovation lies in how the raw materials are sourced and attributed. Tyvek® with Renewable Attribution is linked to ISCC PLUS-certified bio-circular feedstocks through a mass balance system. These feedstocks are derived from second-generation biomass, such as waste and residue streams that do not compete with food production. The approach helps reduce reliance on fossil-based resources while maintaining the performance characteristics customers expect and require.

For packaging and materials professionals unfamiliar with mass balance, it can be thought of as a verified accounting system. Certified bio-circular and conventional raw materials are processed upstream in the supply chain, while independent auditing and certification ensure the allocated renewable HDPE attribution is accurately tracked and verified. The methodology is already widely used in sectors including bio-ethanol, food and forestry, helping organisations accelerate the adoption of alternative feedstocks at scale.

Importantly, the sustainability impact can be measured. Customers can choose renewable attribution levels from 30% to 100%\[1\], with carbon footprint reduction linked directly to the level selected. At a 30% renewable attribution level, Tyvek® with Renewable Attribution supports approximately a 30% reduction in carbon footprint (including CO2 uptake) compared with standard Tyvek®, based on peer-reviewed, ISO-compliant life cycle assessment data.

The product already has early adopters. Bluepoint Tags and Labels, based in the UK, has elected to offer customers wristbands made from both standard Tyvek® and Tyvek® with Renewable Attribution as a choice as part of its broader sustainability strategy. Bluepoint Tags and Labels also uses a repurposed liner across all standard wristbands, diverting waste from landfill and extending the material’s life.

Bluepoint co-founder Iain Pringle said, “We believe demand for more sustainable material choices will only continue to grow. By offering Tyvek® with Renewable Attribution, we have been able to invest ahead of demand and take an early leadership position when it comes to sustainability.”

Tyvek® with Renewable Attribution represents one step in a consumer and industrial user’s broader sustainability roadmap — one that can sit alongside other sustainability initiatives and ongoing efforts to reduce environmental impact across the value chain.

For DuPont, this is one initiative in its sustainability journey. This is a pathway on which it will go further as it works towards its own 2035 Sustainability Goals and focuses on enabling circularity, reducing environmental impact and supporting customers with innovative solutions that deliver direct sustainability advantages.

For organisations seeking practical ways to advance their sustainability goals without compromising performance, Tyvek® with Renewable Attribution provides a meaningful step available today.

\[1\] For active packaging, Tyvek® with Renewable Attribution is currently available up to 30% Renewable Attribution on Healthcare styles.
