PPG has revealed its new PPG Teslin Envos substrate, developed with 30% bio-based content and said to deliver up to 25% carbon footprint reduction compared to its Teslin SP1000 substrate.

The company adds that the new substrate also has improved performance compared to Teslin SP1000, with the bio-based content and carbon footprint reduction measured according to ASTM International and ISO testing standards. The Teslin Envos substrate is suitable for applications including government IDs and passports, RFID labels and specialty labels.

PPG states that its Teslin Envos synthetic paper has improved tear and puncture resistance, tensile strength and flexibility, compatible with a range of printing and finishing processes. The material delivers ‘durability, premium print quality and security’.

The new substrate is available in a 10-mil thickness, with more options planned for development. PPG adds that manufacturing takes place at a facility where it applies purchased renewable electricity credits.

Earlier this year SmartSolve introduced its PureNil 0 packaging substrate, said to be a 100% bio-based and flushable material designed to replace single-use plastics in consumer-packaged goods. Engineered specifically for dry or powdered product formats, the material runs on standard form, fill, and seal equipment.

More recently, global specialty coatings provider Stahl unveiled its Senoprint portfolio of metallic coatings, aiming to reduce waste and align with regulations including the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). The range is available in UV-based and water-based formulations and is said to meet worldwide requirements and support lower volatile organic compounds (VOC) packaging solutions.
