[**Mondi Group**](https://www.mondigroup.com/?ref=packagingeurope.com) **is nominated in the Renewables category of this year’s Sustainability Awards. We spoke with the company’s Sales Director Specialty Kraft Paper, Silvia Hanzelova, to learn more about the innovation.**

### You're a finalist in the Sustainability Awards 2026\. Congratulations! To start off, could you summarise your entry in less than 50 words?

Ad/Vantage Smooth Brown Semi Extensible addresses a key packaging challenge: achieving strength, extensibility and puncture resistance without compromising printability or coating performance. The result is a versatile, recyclable kraft paper for demanding industrial and consumer packaging applications and high-performance paper-based packaging solutions.

### Why do you think the judges were impressed with your entry? Tell us about what is innovative about your product and its impact on packaging sustainability.

The innovation is the balance of properties we have achieved in one paper grade. In many packaging applications, converters and brand owners need strength, printability and good processability at the same time. That is not always easy to achieve in a paper substrate, especially for more demanding applications.

The paper offers high strength, stretchability and puncture resistance, together with a smooth surface that supports excellent print quality and coating performance. Achieving this balance took a dedicated three-year development programme by our kraft paper specialists.

Ad/Vantage Smooth Brown Semi Extensible can be used as a high-performance base paper for coated and heat-sealable packaging solutions. It is particularly well suited to demanding form-fill-and-seal applications for sharp-edged or heavier products, such as toys and dry food, spare parts and building materials, where strength, puncture resistance and reliable processing are essential.

The smooth surface also matters from a sustainability perspective. It allows barrier materials to be applied where they are needed, which can help converters optimise material use within the packaging structure. The paper is made from 100% unbleached fresh softwood fibres from responsibly sourced material and is recyclable in established EU paper recycling streams.

What may have stood out to the judges is that the product does not ask converters to choose between performance and sustainability. It combines both in a single paper substrate, which is important for applications that have traditionally relied on more complex material structures.

### Finally, can you tell us about the ongoing development of your project, e.g. how your innovation has been received by the industry?

We developed Ad/Vantage Smooth Brown Semi Extensible for applications where paper needs to do more than one thing well. It needs to be strong, extensible and puncture-resistant, and also smooth enough for high-quality printing and suitable for coating.

Looking ahead, we see further opportunities in industrial and consumer packaging applications where this balance of properties is important. Many of these applications require strength, printability, coating performance and efficient processing in a single paper substrate, and that is where Ad/Vantage Smooth Brown Semi Extensible can offer a compelling paper-based alternative. This also creates opportunities in applications where paper may previously not have been considered a viable option because the required combination of performance characteristics was not available in a single paper grade.

It comes down to using the right material for the right application. That means understanding what the packaging needs to do, using materials efficiently and developing fibre-based solutions where paper is the appropriate fit. That remains an important focus for us as we explore new applications for high-performance kraft paper.
