[**Veolia**](https://www.veoliawatertechnologies.com/?ref=packagingeurope.com) **will design and supply two CO2 purification and dehydration units to be installed at** [**Encyclis**](https://www.encyclis.com/?ref=packagingeurope.com)**’ energy-from-waste facility, expecting to capture and store 370,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.**

The contract was awarded by [Kanadevia Inova AG](https://kanadevia-inova.com/?ref=packagingeurope.com), the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the Protos carbon capture plant. The Protos project is a full-scale carbon capture facility integrated with an energy-from-waste plant, set to process up to 500,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste annually.

In turn, it is expected to generate up to 49.9 MW of baseload electricity for the National Grid and capture approximately 370,000 tonnes of CO2 every year.

Once operational in mid-2029, the facility is anticipated to become a negative emitter. Captured CO2 will be transported via the HyNet North West pipeline network for permanent geological storage in depleted gas reservoirs beneath Liverpool Bay in the Irish Sea.

Veolia will build the units at Encyclis’ facility near Ellesmere Port in Cheshire, England, marking its entry into the full-scale carbon capture market. The units are designed to fit in the limited space of the Protos ERF building envelope, ensuring that the captured CO2 meets stringent purity standards for safe transport and long-term storage.

“This pioneering project establishes Veolia at the forefront of industrial decarbonization and environmental security,” says Anne Le Guennec, CEO of Veolia's water technology activities. “We are delivering on our promise to drive ecological transformation by enabling industries to transition toward net zero, in line with our GreenUp strategic program.

“With active carbon capture projects across Europe and the US, Veolia is the partner of choice for organizations seeking to decarbonize at scale, and we look forward to accelerating additional carbon capture, utilization and storage projects worldwide.”

The news comes after Veolia [invested £70 million](https://www.packagingeurope.com/veolias-closed-loop-recycling-plant-for-food-grade-pet-receives-70-million/) (€81,227,650) into a closed-loop, tray-to-tray PET recycling facility last year. The plant was anticipated to process 80,000 tonnes of mixed plastics annually and result in new, food-grade packaging.

In other news, [Metsä Group](https://www.metsagroup.com/?ref=packagingeurope.com) and [Andritz](https://www.andritz.com/group-en?ref=packagingeurope.com) are operating a [carbon capture pilot plant](https://www.packagingeurope.com/industry-first-carbon-capture-pilot-plant-launches-at-metsa-group-mill/) at Metsä Group’s Rauma mill. The pilot is thought to be the first in the industry to harness carbon dioxide from pulp mill flue gases.
