Recyclable, high-barrier polypropylene pharma blister revealed by ACG
ACG Packaging Materials has released RecycloPod PP Ultra, a polypropylene-based blister packaging system that offers recyclability and barrier protection
ACG Packaging Materials has released RecycloPod PP Ultra, a polypropylene-based blister packaging system that offers recyclability and barrier protection for sensitive pharmaceutical products.
RecycloPod PP Ultra was developed alongside customers and seeks to address the challenges of recycling existing polypropylene blister solutions – all without compromising moisture and oxygen barrier requirements.
Using its PP/EVOH/PP forming structure, the packaging is thought to achieve a water vapour transmission rate of less than 0.60 g/m² per day and an oxygen transmission rate of less than 0.20 cm³/m² per day.
The ‘predominantly’ polypropylene blister structure, which includes a polypropylene lidding film, is engineered for reliable thermoforming and sealing on pharmaceutical packaging lines.
It is intended to align with upcoming legislative mandates for recyclable packaging, including those introduced under the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.
ACG goes on to highlight its commitment to developing lower-impact and increasingly circular manufacturing environments, both within its own operations and for pharmaceutical customers.
“Pharmaceutical companies should not have to choose between protecting their product and progressing their packaging sustainability objectives,” said Dr Akbar Ali, head of Development & Technology at ACG Packaging Materials. “With RecycloPod PP Ultra, our objective was to provide both high moisture and oxygen barrier protection while meeting the practical requirements of pharmaceutical manufacturing and supporting design for recyclability.”
SR Shivshankar, CEO at ACG Packaging Materials, continued: “RecycloPod PP Ultra forms part of our wider sustainability strategy. We are participating in the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as part of its net-zero ambitions and using digitalization to support more efficient and sustainable manufacturing, with facilities recognized by the World Economic Forum's Global Lighthouse Network.”
ACG’s ‘Pod’ lineup of packaging solutions draws inspiration from a pea pod’s protective functions. The range is intended to balance sustainability metrics, upcoming packaging needs and evolving regulatory requirements.
Previously, ACG revealed its SuperPod cold-form blister technology, which seeks to use less material per pack and downsize blister cavities by up to 39%. The multi-layer laminate is designed to unlock deep-draw, cold-drawing cavity formation, reportedly forming up to three times more blisters per shot.
In other news, SÜDPACK Medica has unveiled a mono-polypropylene blister solution for dietary supplement packaging. The pack is set to meet the recyclability requirements of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation while maintaining contact safety and product performance.
