Exchange For Change publishes list of certified machines for UK’s DRS scheme
Exchange for Change, the industry-led organization delivering the UK’s upcoming deposit return scheme, has published its first list
Exchange for Change, the industry-led organization delivering the UK’s upcoming deposit return scheme, has published its first list of certified reverse vending machines (RVMs) – a move set to help retailers prepare for the scheme’s launch next year.
Each RVM has been submitted for assessment and tested on 77 separate requirements. A specialist assessment provider has independently conducted the full certification process.
The list is set to help retailers feel confident that a certified machine is compatible with the necessary specifications to operate within the scheme, including the identification and acceptance of eligible containers, fraud prevention, connectivity with scheme systems, accessibility requirements, and the secure handling of transaction data.
Retailers are encouraged to check the approved list before selecting, purchasing or leasing an RVM. The list will be updated continuously as new RVMs are certified.
“Publishing the first list of certified RVMs is an important step in helping retailers prepare for the launch of the Deposit Return Scheme in October 2027,” said Russell Davies, chief executive officer at Exchange For Change. “Certification provides confidence that approved machines have met the requirements needed to operate within the scheme and gives retailers greater certainty as they consider their options.
“Retailers considering an RVM can now review the approved list and discuss the options available with suppliers. The list is designed to help retailers of all sizes make informed decisions ahead of the scheme launch, while the new Artwork Guidance provides retailers with approved branding that can be adopted alongside their own, helping to create a consistent and recognisable approach across the scheme.
“We will continue to provide guidance and support as preparations for scheme go-live progress, including through the grant scheme available to eligible small independent retailers to support the purchase of an RVM.”
Additionally, Exchange For Change has published its new RVM Artwork Guidance to provide approved branding, signage, and consumer instructions for certified machine models. This is hoped to support a consistent, recognizable approach across RVMs and help consumers confidently navigate the system from launch day.
The UK’s deposit return scheme is expected to commence on 1 October 2027.
To assist in further preparation, Exchange For Change has recently announced the scheme’s intended producer fees. These will be set at 0p for the first 15 months from October 2027 to December 2028, and are expected to rise to 0.6p per unit for aluminium and steel containers and 2.3p per unit for PET containers from January 2029.
